Through much of his life, Glenn was been a passionate advocate for animals. Here is a sample of his animal-friendly initiatives:
- helping to build Toronto’s first municipally operated animal hospital, which has already conducted about 11,000 operations on animals
- raising money to create Toronto’s first free spay and neuter clinic for stray cats, to help reduce the exploding cat population
- creating Toronto’s—and Canada’s—first mobile spay and neuter clinic
- raising funds for improvements to the Scarborough Animal Shelter, including adding outdoor cat runs and dog runs, as well as air conditioning for all the shelter’s inhabitants
- creating four new dog parks in Scarborough Centre, one of which is Toronto’s largest leash-free dog park, featuring a separate area for small dogs
- serving on the Toronto Zoo Board of Management and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) while he was a City Councillor
- working with well-known animal ally Bob Barker to get the Toronto Zoo’s elephants retired to a warmer climate
- pushing for increased protection of wildlife through the creation of a national park in the Rouge Valley
- working with the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) to prevent the death of thousands of migratory birds, many of whom crash into high-rises on their journey through Toronto
- banning puppy mills in Toronto
- working closely with Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam to ban shark fins in the City of Toronto
- helping to protect the large colony of cormorants nesting on Tommy Thompson Park (aka the Leslie Street Spit)
- bringing dogs and their owners together for the occasional “Cutest Dog Contest”
