Outdoor community ice rinks provide residents of all ages with opportunities for recreation. Glenn worked to improve facilities at the Scarborough Civic Centre and to help ensure that new facilities would be created in two other Scarborough locations.
Civic Centre Skate Change Room Upgrades
Glenn learned how to skate at the Scarborough Civic Centre and, when he was elected in 2003, the local washrooms and change rooms were exactly the same as those from his youth! It took several years to find the funding to replace some old, smelly bathroom equipment with new, modern furnishings, refinish some of the charming old wooden benches, and create actual change rooms for staff and visiting artists and performers. This little spot is still little, but Glenn says it now has some polish and shine that makes using the facilities a little more pleasant.
Churchill Heights Park Rink
An outdoor skating rink is making winter a more fun-filled season for residents of the Churchill Heights community.
Five local families spearheaded the project in 2015, and 20 volunteers stepped up to create the rink—a project that Glenn supports. The driving forces behind this project shared construction news through the Facebook presence of “Friends of Churchill Heights Park.”
Thank you to Project Leader Asheena Rycman, Construction Coordinator Chris Warmerdam, and all of the volunteers who pitched in to build this wonderful outdoor rink!
Markham/Ellesmere Outdoor Ice Rink
As part of the new ME (Markham and Ellesmere) condo development, the developer agreed to build an outdoor reflective pool that will be an open space in the summer and an outdoor skating rink in the winter. The outdoor artificial ice rink will ensure that there is year-round life, vitality and fun in the community. Thousands of children will be able to learn how to skate just a short walk from where they live!
McCowan Regional Park Outdoor Skating Oval
Glenn supported the building of a major new outdoor, artificial ice-skating oval in the new McCowan Park (just south of Eglinton Avenue). This amazing new rink is drawing residents from all over Scarborough to enjoy perfectly maintained, flooded ice during the winter months. The ice is giving us all a reason to come outside and enjoy ourselves—even when it’s -20 degrees!
